What’s next for the Rangers?

The Rangers have had a busy offseason so far, but have left several holes in the team with the moves they have made.

                       CONTRACTS: 43/50

The Rangers have approximately 8.4 Million dollars to resign Center Mika Zibanejad, and sign another center.

Exploring options for the Rangers:
Center: The Rangers will need another center. On June 23, the Rangers made a trade sending our first line center, Derek Stepan, to the Coyotes for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo, and the 7th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft which the Rangers used to select center, Lias Andersson.
Potential Trades:
Option one: Ryan-Nugent-Hopkins.

The number one selection of the 2011 NHL Draft never turned into the number one center Edmonton was hoping he would be. Ryan has decent numbers in the NHL mainly because of his passing ability and from playing with excellent wingers. The Oilers need to focus on signing Center Leon Draisaitl who will likely ask for 5,000,000+. In order for this trade to work, the Oilers would have to retain some of Ryan’s salary, which they would not like doing, especially since they want to have a chance to contend for the Cup and will need cap space to do so. Edmonton does have cap flexibility with just over 16.8 million remaining and will want another defenseman. The Rangers are comfortable with their top four defensemen and will likely not trade one of those for a center. That leaves Nick Holden and Marc Staal. Marc Staal has too large a cap-hit so I don’t see him being traded. Nick Holden is not enough to entice Edmonton and would be the icing on the cake in any deal involving a number one or two center.
Option two: Tyler Bozak

Toronto has a number one center in Auston Matthews and is currently over the cap. Toronto would be clearing 4.2 million of cap and I don’t think that Toronto would ask for much in return because they can’t afford to take on players with large cap hits. They would likely ask for prospects and/or picks.
Either Bozak and Zibanejad could be the Rangers’ one and two centers. If the Rangers were to trade for Bozak it would leave Zibanejad 4.2 million dollars, which to me sounds fair. However, Zibanejad has already asked for more than that.   The Rangers might solve some issues by trading Holden.
Free Agent:
Option three: Daniel Winnik

There are no great UFA centers available. I would be interested in Daniel Winnik. He is 32 and would be a good depth center. I do not think he would solve the Ranger’s center problems though.

Rangers’ System:
Option four: Lias Andersson

The Rangers selected him seventh overall in the 2017 entry draft. He is a dependable center but is he ready to take the jump to the NHL?

I think the signing of Shattenkirk, the trade of Stepan, and the acquisition of DeAngelo and Desharnais make the Rangers a quicker and better team. Now we have to wait and see what they do to fill the void at center.
Happy offseason Ranger fans!

  1. I’d like to see Lias Andersson get a chance. They drafted him thinking that he might be able to make the squad as the fourth-line pivot.
